The South Island National Daffodil Society Show  will be held at the 2025 Expo. This Show will be the 99th Annual South Island Show. It promises to be a Spring spectacular
with daffodil displays of all the different colours and forms available in the world today.
Most of these blooms are hybrids having been bred over the last 120 years from species
daffodils found in the wild in Europe.

Special mention must be made of Miniature varieties which are much smaller than the
standard varieties. This section of the Show is where you will also find examples of species
daffodils. Another section of the Show to look out for is the Intermediates which are smaller
than the standard varieties but larger than the Miniatures. These blooms are well suited for
growing in containers and smaller gardens. Other Show stoppers to look out for include the
Doubles and Splits.

Visitors to 2024’s Expo would have seen a display of bonsai classified by their size, varying from Mame/Shohin (miniatures <20 cm) to Dai (large > 60cm).  The display for 2025 was based on the style of the tree rather than it’s size.  There are a number of recognized styles and in the show  there will be classes for Informal Uprights representing trees of the plains and valleys; Cascade/Semi-cascade from the mountains and cliff faces; Literati style, a very free-form, minimalist style; Group and Landscape style; as well as Shohin/Mame and novice classes. .

The Botanical Expo is  known for its vibrant plant fair where you can find a wide variety of rare and unusual plants. Specialists will love the rare alpines, bulbs and perennials. Super stalls to buy those impossible-to-find treasures and hard-to-find gardening books.

On display  will be competition entries from Avon Floral Art in Canterbury. A super group of artists who use flowers, all parts of plants and a huge variety of other materials to make thrilling displays.

With demonstrations, workshops and speakers on offer throughout the weekend, there is something for everyone – a chance to see skills in action, get hands on and learn more.
